IoW DFA Saturday League

Division 3 – Tuesday April 26th 2016

Hours before this fixture it was learned that Rookley had pulled out of the League with their results expunged from the records, this meant that the young Yachtsmen needed a win instead of a draw to gain promotion.

The side started very brightly knocking the ball about from one side of the pitch to the other and were rewarded on 5mins when NICKY VYSE was put through on goal and he calmly slotted home to give the visitors the lead. Cowes were playing with a lot of confidence and really stretching the Brading defence which lead to skipper JORDAN WHITTLE finding time on the edge of their box to smash his shot into the top corner to make it 2-0. Brading came back into it a little after this, but did not have a shot at Wilfred Armfield’s goal until the 33rd minute, which was mainly down to the solid defensive work by Ashley Brett, Jake Cass, Rupert Bowles and Jordon Stacey.

H-t 0 – 2

At the break, the boys were told to get the ball out wide again as much as possible, as this was where they were causing the home side problems. Their keeper was forced to pull off a couple of good saves to deny Joe Craig and when Gareth Bricknall’s overhead kick beat the keeper, somehow it span back off the line to safety. Former 1st XI skipper, GARETH BRICKNALL, continuing his comeback from a long term injury, was not going to be denied though, as on the hour he added a third goal when he shot through a crowd of defenders to score. Two substitutes then took over as WILL SHARP , who replaced Gareth Bricknall, scored a similar goal just 5mins after coming off the bench to make it 4-0, and then Super Sub ALEX BOIRAND got his name on the score sheet on 80mins to wrap up the points and promotion. This was a great team performance from everyone, which was summed up by Joe Craig chasing all the way back to our area in the final minute of the game to make a tackle to help keep a clean sheet.
