Following their Hampshire Cup victory last weekend Cowes Sports went in search of their first league points as they entertained US Portsmouth at Cowes Enterprise College 4G pitch.

A slow start from the home side saw them nearly go behind in the first minute but the shot flew over the bar. They did go behind though on 5 minutes when US Pompey’s forward, looking offside, was put through on goal but he dillied and dallied and the defence recovered before he was somehow allowed to poke the ball past Sol Carson. A very disappointing goal to concede from Cowes’ point of view. The visitors nearly doubled their lead in the 8th minute but the shot was straight at Sol Carson who saved with ease. Jamie Trowbridge then played in Cory Sanderson on 23 minutes but his shot smashed against the right hand post and was cleared. Poor defending again cost the young Yachtsmen as Pompey doubled their lead in the 25th minute with a ball lofted over Sol Carson. Cowes skipper Cory Sanderson was the home sides most dangerous forward and in the 34th minute forced the visiting keeper to save well. Right on half time a ball into the Cowes area looked to be keepers ball but somehow a home defender kicked the ball out of Sol’s grasp and their forward managed to poke the ball into the goal to give the visitors a three goal half time lead. H-t 0 – 3

A half time ear bashing, a change of formation and two substitutions, Will Foulsham and Harry Symes on for Haydn Parker and Kyle Kilroy certainly saw the young Yachtsmen with more energy and fight. CORY SANDERSON saw his 47th minute shot find the bottom right corner of the goal to give his side hope of a comeback. However the visitors were allowed to much time and space and took full advantage as they scored a fourth goal in the 51st minute. Cowes tried hard to find a way back into the game and maybe a bit more composure in front of goal they may have done so. Both teams had chances to score more goals but none were taken as the young Yachtsmen slipped to a disappointing home defeat.
